Social Welfare Must Give Good Parenting Services

The Ghana NGOs Coalition on Rights of the Child (GNCRC) has recently urged the Department of Social Welfare (DSW) and others to provide parenting and counselling support services regularly to parents and children to enhance parent-child relationships. Additionally, the GNCRC has called on (DSW) to offer financial and technical support to broaden the scope of their family strengthening and empowerment work.

According to Mr. Barima Akwasi Amankwaah, the acting National Coordinator of GNCRC, “there are no programmes and services aimed at building capacity of parents to effectively deal with issues that confront children and youth as well as strengthening families to perform their primary responsibilities in the upbringing of their children.” GNCRC is calling for an increase in awareness raising on the legal aid services available to families as well as media engagement, trainings, and a national plan of action and budget for implementing child and family welfare policy.
