Abstract
The arrival of unaccompanied migrant minors in Italy continues to increase. This phenomenon is complex with regard to both the quantity of minors to care for and the fragility, emotional stress and vulnerability of these children. Most of these minors are placed in residential care communities, which represent the classical model of intervention for Italian out-of-home children, but new projects are being developed to create new intervention models in order to improve the care of unaccompanied migrant minors. The present research aimed to describe and compare three new…
Introduction
In European countries, the phenomenon of unaccompanied minors (UAMS) has assumed an increasing quantitative consistency in recent years. In Italy, the policy of reception of these children has been defined as a “young” policy, which is being defined at the very moment in which the phenomenon is revealed. Moreover, it is an occurrence that changes incessantly, shifting extents and features, within a framework of EU policies that in turn affect the national arrangements.
In such a fluctuating and unstable picture, there are many aspects that require specific considerations.…
Since March 2016, more than 260,000 people have arrived on Italian shores. The majority of them are young people, with unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) accounting for up to 15% of all arrivals. The assessment used purposive sampling to identify and interview 81…

The Italian reception system for unaccompanied migrant children still largely focuses on material needs, while paying little attention to the educational, social and economic needs.…
This Guide, written in Spanish, features a compilation of several social protection programs, services and public policies that resulted in the prevention of family breakdown and in the support of families and communities in caring and protecting their children. It also describes different experiences of the implementation of foster care programs, and the description of processes of de-institutionalization and system reform. All these examples are taken from the Latin American region, Italy and Romania.
This article is part of a special edition of the journal Psychosocial Intervention (Volume 22 No.03 December 2013) focused on the state of child protection in a wide variety of countries with special attention to out-of-home care placements, principally family foster care and residential care, tough several aspects related to adoption were included as well.
The analysis of the historical development of child protection in Spain and Italy shows remarkable common aspects. There has been a…
