Abstract
Youth care workers in U.S. residential treatment centers (RTCs) provide 24-h care to youth whose significant psychosocial needs cannot be managed in a less restrictive setting. They have sometimes abused or neglected youth in their care. This study investigates staff perspectives on a new form of intensive oversight developed in New York State to prevent maltreatment of youth in care facilities. It asks: How does intensive oversight and investigation mandated by a state-run agency for the protection of people in care affect residential youth care…

Abstract
Older adopted children and their families often express high need for support for attachment and trauma related concerns. Postadoption mental health intervention focused on enhancing the parent–child relationship among adoptive parents and adoptees is essential for fostering placement permanency among these families. This single group pilot study explored the effect of child–parent relationship therapy (CPRT) for adoptive parents of preadolescents who reported attachment related concerns, stress in the parent–child relationship, and child behavior problems. Participants were…
Abstract
The nature and consequences of threat in the caregiving environment have been widely studied and discussed. The construct of psychosocial neglect, however, has received less attention. In this paper, we advance a novel framework for examining the nature and consequences of neglect, which we posit can be represented as variations along a continuum from severe psychosocial neglect to environmental enrichment. Recognizing that caregiving is multi-dimensional, we conceptualize enriching input from caregivers as falling along two dimensions. Specifically, we propose that caregivers…
Abstract
Literature on subjective-wellbeing (SWB) of children and adolescents in residential care is still scarce. In addition, few studies relate self-control and SWB at these ages, particularly in this population. This study aims to examine this relationship based on different measures to assess the cognitive component of this construct: Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI), Overall Life Satisfaction (OLS) and Students Life Satisfaction Scale (SLSS). The main objective is to explore, from a bottom-up perspective, the moderating effect of an experienced happiness…

An important obstacle for family reunification following child placement in residential care and other temporary out-of-home care services is the lack of engagement among parents.
Objective
The aim of this meta-analysis is to identify the most effective interventions to promote parental engagement and family reunification in high-income countries.
Method and participants
Eight studies, for a total of 2996 families, were used to conduct two series of meta-analyses. Each study examined the effectiveness of a goal-oriented …
This information sheet outlines provincial adoption provisions for Indigenous children. Provincial protections pertaining to the adoption of Indigenous children are compiled in two tables, displayed and discussed below. As Canada’s government prepares to draft federal legislation in support of Indigenous child welfare, it must consider the strengths and vulnerabilities of current provincial legislation. Such consideration will help federal, provincial, and territorial governments to ensure Indigenous children remain connected to their families, communities and cultures even when placed for…
Abstract
The current study examined the use of socio-emotional well-being measures among a sample of 57 children and youth living in a congregate care type setting such as a group home or shelter. One or two measures were administered depending on the age of the child/youth, the Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale-2 for children ages 5–18 years and the Youth Quality of Life-Short Form for youth ages 13–18 years. In addition to the measures completed by the children/youth, caregivers also completed measures assessing the social-emotional well-being of the child in her/his care.…
