This document compares three versions of the same home visiting model, aimed at improving parent-child interactions and child development: the well-known Jamaica model, which was gradually scaled up from an efficacy trial (‘proof of concept’) in Jamaica, to a pilot in Colombia, to an at-scale program in Peru. It first describes the design, implementation and impacts of these three programs. Then, it analyzes the threats to scalability in each of these experiences and discusses how they could have affected program outcomes, with a focus on three of the elements of the economic model…
We agree on the need to integrate intimate partner violence (IPV) and violence against children (VAC) prevention efforts. But what does this integration look like in practice?
In this webinar, prevention experts discuss the process, experiences, and challenges of the ongoing integration of IPV prevention and gender into the Investing in Children and their Societies (ICS) Skilful Parenting Programme, and inclusion of VAC in the Indashyikirwa couples IPV prevention programme.
The Reconstructing Children’s Rights Institute is a multi-part series of conversations and resources for learning, information sharing and actionable next steps. The goal is to raise awareness and recognition of how racism, patriarchy, and power permeate the international child rights and child protection field. This first conversation examines the larger…
Parenting and caregiving programmes offer a promising pathway to improve gender inequality and prevent both intimate partner violence (IPV) and violence against children (VAC) in the home. In this webinar, UNICEF’s Lauren Rumble and Alessandra Guedes describe how violence in childhood is gendered, introduce the links between violence against women and children, and share effective gender-transformative strategies. Then, the Prevention Collaborative’s Lina Digolo highlights key findings and recommendations from parenting programmes. Discussants Clara Alemann and Thandi van Heyningen explain…
Abstract
Poverty and teenage pregnancy are common in low‐and‐middle‐income countries and can impede the development of healthy parent‐child relationships. This study aimed to test whether a home‐visiting intervention could improve early attachment relationships between adolescent mothers and their infants living in poverty in Brazil. Analyses were conducted on secondary outcomes from a randomized controlled trial (NCT0280718) testing the efficacy of a home‐visiting program, Primeiros Laços, on adolescent mothers’ health and parenting skills and their infants’ development.…
Abstract
This study experimentally tested proximal outcomes of Connecting, a low-cost, self-directed, family-based substance-use prevention program for foster families. Families (n = 220) fostering youth age 11 to 15 years were recruited and randomly assigned into the self-administered program with telephone support (n = 110) or a treatment as usual, control condition (n = 110). Program materials included a workbook with family activities and …
The period of early development from conception until children reach age eight (8) are the most important in terms of unlocking full potentials – and as such – for securing sustainable development. It is for this reason that access to comprehensive, quality Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes and services is recognised as both a fundamental right in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The CRC is the overarching normative and legal framework for ECD and the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world. In Africa, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare…
The State of the World’s Fathers 2021 report – the fourth in the series – presents research on care work during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on structural barriers that prevent equitable distribution of caregiving between women and men. While data show that men are participating more in care work during the pandemic, data also show that the world is a long way off from achieving full equality in care work.
The report addresses this challenge from three angles. First, it examines what “men’s involvement in care” looks like now and what it could look like if equality is achieved. Second,…
Abstract
When concerns about child safety and wellbeing are substantiated, decisions are made in the context of the options available—child(ren) remaining supported within family, short‐term removal with a plan for return home when parental issues are addressed, or permanent care placement. In New Zealand, families facing possible removal experience multiple challenges including poverty, family violence, parental mental health and substance abuse issues and historical and inter‐generational trauma. Lack of resources to facilitate the intensive intervention needed to address such complexity…
