Key lessons learnt on how to carry out effective care reform in Eastern and Southern Africa from the COVID 19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic posed a fundamental threat to the care of children in Eastern and Southern Africa. It exacerbated many causes of separation and violence in families and placed a huge strain on services that aim to improve children’s care. Responding to these challenges also led to rapid adaptation, innovation, and learning. In this paper, we document lessons learnt on care reform that emerged from the pandemic.

Background
LGBTQ+ youth frequently experience disparities in outcomes related to permanency and overall well-being while in out-of-home care. These negative outcomes often persist after youth have transitioned out of care, particularly in the domains of housing, education, employment, and mental health. Initial research has found that the ongoing COVID-19 …
COVID-19 led to widespread disruption of services that promote family well-being. Families impacted most were those already experiencing disparities due to structural and systemic barriers. Existing support systems faded into the background as families became more isolated. New approaches were needed to deliver evidence-based, low-cost interventions to reach families within communities. The authors adapted a family strengthening intervention developed in Kenya (“Tuko Pamoja”) for the United States.
The authors tested a three-phase participatory adaptation process. In phase 1, they…

Result:

The availability of new excess mortality data enables us to update global minimum estimates of COVID-19 orphanhood and caregiver death among children. Consequences for children can be devastating, including institutionalization, abuse, traumatic grief, mental health problems, adolescent pregnancy, poor educational outcomes, and chronic and infectious diseases.
Global totals and country comparisons were previously hampered by inconsistencies in COVID-19 testing and incomplete death reporting. The new orphanhood estimates derived here based on excess deaths provide a comprehensive measure of…
This report updates the authors' previous findings to provide the most current estimates of COVID19 associated orphanhood and caregiver loss during the first 26 months of the pandemic (March 1, 2020 – May 1, 2022). In this report, the authors use newly available excess mortality data published by the World Health Organization (WHO) for every nation, to update global minimum estimates of COVID-19-associated orphanhood and caregiver death among children.
Although the paper also reports updated global orphanhood estimates using, in addition to WHO data, excess mortality data available from by…
