The 2023 assessment of Diocesan Family Life Departments (FLDs) in Kenya, conducted by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) in collaboration with Changing the Way We Care℠ (CTWWC), highlights the Church’s critical role in advancing care reform and supporting families. The assessment across 23 dioceses examined FLD capacity, service delivery, resources, and partnerships.
While the FLDs were rated as "good" in areas such as team capacity, service delivery, and visibility, significant gaps were identified, particularly in resource availability and external collaboration. Many dioceses face challenges in securing adequate funding, expanding volunteer training, and implementing structured service delivery approaches. Additionally, the reliance on volunteers poses sustainability risks, and there is a need for stronger partnerships with external organizations and government agencies.
To enhance their impact, FLDs require increased investment in capacity building, logistical support, and partnerships that can extend their reach and improve outcomes for families and vulnerable children across Kenya.
