Pre-conference Workshop: Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development in the 21st Century

Objectives

UNICEF Europe and Central Asia Regional Office, the World Health Organization and ISSA are pleased to offer a Pre-conference workshop which will provide an inspiring and enriching joint learning experience. Dr. Frank Oberklaid, Founding Director, Centre for Community Child Health, Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne will be a key contributor at the workshop.

Aims of the workshop

Workshop participants will be updated on Nurturing Care and progress made to date. They will also learn about Child Health Redesign and the changing role of the health sector with regard to young child health and development. Country case studies will be discussed and examples of noteworthy practice will be shared.  

Examples will be introduced of different modalities that use digital technology to promote and implement the Nurturing Care Framework. Among the solutions are:

  • Baby Buddy - an app for the Nurturing Care of babies and their mothers
  • Guide for Monitoring Child Development app - translating and testing it in  Turkmenistan
  • Halo Beba - phone based counselling and support for parents
  • Alternative and augmentative communication solutions for young children with  communication challenges 

Participants

Practitioners, representatives of NGOs, researchers, donors, policy makers and all those with an interest in exploring new ways and means for reaching young children and their families and for improving the quality of children’s lives are welcomed to join.

Presenters

Next to Dr. Frank Oberklaid of the Centre for Community Child Health, Royal Children’s Hospital, in Melbourne (Australia), presentations are given by experts in the field of supporting families for Nurturing Care with a strong background in the science of early childhood development and experience in employing digital solutions.

Participants can bring materials and tools they have developed, so that they can exchange resources and lessons learnt in the market place that will be organized during the coffee breaks. 

Practical information

This workshop is offered free of charge to participants in the ISSA Conference 2019.  A meal and refreshments will be served in the lunch and two coffee breaks.
