The purpose of the ‘Imbeleko and social connectedness’ project was to conduct a cross-sectional study in order to explore and describe indigenous ways of care and support to inform policy and intervention. Methodologically, a concurrent mixed method design was used. Participants were conveniently sampled (n=430; elders=240; youth=190; men=150 and women=280) in collaboration with Nelson…

Abstract
The 2014 Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in West Africa is the largest to date by far. Ebola Virus Disease causes disproportionate mortality among the working-age population, resulting in far more mortality for parents of young children than other health crises. This paper combines data on the age distribution of current and projected mortality from Ebola with the fertility distribution of adults in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, to estimate the likely impact of the epidemic on the number of orphans in these three countries. Using the latest mortality estimates (…
Building upon a Save the Children regional participatory research initiative on kinship care that was undertaken in West Central Africa in 2012 – 2013, Save the Children’s East Africa Regional Office supported a similar process in East Africa, which resulted in this research report. The aim of the research in East Africa was to build knowledge on endogenous care practices within families and communities, especially informal kinship care, in order to increase the care and protection of children. The research on kinship care was implemented in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Zanzibar.

This study assesses reintegration trajectories of child soldiers in Burundi several years after demobilization. It looks broadly at socioeconomic and mental health indicators of a large group of former child soldiers and never recruited peers, both of who participated in an economic support program.
Findings of this study support the notion of the long-term resilience – when provided with support in socio-economic reintegration - of former child soldiers. They indicate that former child soldiers in Burundi feel by and large socially integrated within communities, with high work/employment…

Background: A community-centered program supported by Rwanda’s national government aims to provide a “minimum package” of services for OVC, including comprehensive access to health services, assistance with school fees, child protection services, as well as nutritional, psychosocial, and economic support. While strong political will exists to protect and support this population, the mobilization of resources has become increasingly difficult given the magnitude of children’s needs throughout the country, which has endured the long-term effects of the 1994 genocide and the…
