Join an upcoming event hosted by Disability Rights International and supported by the Global Coalition on Deinstitutionalization to analyze and present the Inquiry Report and the recommendations issued by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities regarding Mexico, with the aim of promoting understanding of its findings, reflecting on their implications in the national and international level, and encouraging actions aimed at ensuring compliance with and strengthening the rights of persons with disabilities.

This report contains the conclusions, observations, and recommendations adopted by the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities regarding the procedure for investigating serious or systematic violations established in Article 6 of the Optional Protocol to the Convention.

This study examines the physical and psychological well-being of children and adolescents in residential care facilities in Mexico, addressing a major gap in systematic data. It finds that well-being levels are often below desired standards and that institutional responses only partially meet child protection principles, highlighting the need for improved practices, training, and coordination.

This research by Women’s Refugee Commission and Physicians for Human Rights found that many deported parents were denied the opportunity to make arrangements for their children, leading to increased family separations that may become long-term or permanent.

This article describes how UN human rights experts have expressed serious concern about historic illegal inter-country adoptions in Guatemala in which at least 80 Indigenous children were reportedly taken from an institution called Hogar Temporal Elisa Martínez after being captured or forcibly disappeared between 1968 and 1996, and later adopted abroad without proper consent or legal safeguards.

This article analyzes Guatemala’s child welfare and intercountry adoption systems before and after the 2007 suspension, using Midgley’s framework to examine reforms across non-formal, market-based, non-profit, faith-based, and government systems. Framed by international child rights law, including the Hague Convention, it highlights the shift from illicit, profit-driven adoption practices toward a reformed system while centering child rights and the experiences of birth mothers during the peak adoption era.

Belize has made important strides in strengthening its child protection system; however, significant challenges remain.

This report summarizes a regional consultation convened by UNICEF and Pan American Health Organization to strengthen efforts to prevent and address violence against children in Latin America and the Caribbean. It highlights existing evidence, policy frameworks, and good practices from participating countries to support more coordinated and effective responses to violence against children.
